Support - FAQ - USB 3.0 to SATA Devices - Single Drive in black
For our most commonly asked questions take a look at our frequently asked questions (FAQs) below. If you have any queries that are not covered here, please head to our RAM service or contact our team who will be more than happy to help.
Q1. Why is the transfer rate far slower than 5Gbps as promoted?
The USB 3.0 transfer rate of 5Gbps, with a transfer speed is 625MB/s, is about 10 times faster than the mainstream USB 2.0 transfer rate of 480Mb/s, which has a transfer speed of 60 MB/s. Taking current usage conditions into consideration, the transfer speed can achieve about 3 times that of USB 2.0. The actual transfer speed depends on the specific environment the product is used in.
Q2. What size of SATA drives are supported?
The latest firmware adds support for GPT format to allow compatibility with larger storage devices. We have tested with drives up to 4TB.
Note that particular operating systems may have their own lower limits. For example, Windows XP limits drive size to 2TB per partition.
Q3. How should I insert drives?
Slide drives gently into the top of docking station bay, with SATA connectors aligned. Do not exert force. Drives will attach and rest on the SATA connector with the drive centered in the dock, cradled with space for airflow on all sides, so no fan is required. Drives are easily removed and reinserted with no cables or connectors to attach.
Q4. There’s no disk in the package – do I need to install any software?
There is no software to install. For both USB 3.0 and USB 2.0, the UtechSmart US-USB3-SATA-S1 is able to use the standard USB Mass Storage class drivers provided by Windows XP and later, and all recent versions of Mac and Linux.
